Chapter Seven
Never before had Clay wished so badly for a phone. Even during that first year, when he hadn’t yet learned how to go into a trance in the otherworld and the minutes had ticked by like cold molasses, he hadn’t wanted his phone this much. Had Jacob given his number, Clay probably would have broken down and tried to convince Donnie to get another line in his name. As it was, he didn’t have Jacob’s number, didn’t have internet access except for when Bri came by with her phone, and didn’t have any way of paying for either so it was all wishful thinking regardless.
Two days after Jacob left, the humidity finally broke, the thunderstorm rolling in early afternoon, all dark clouds and wicked wind. There was one oak tree sitting across the street from the pub, its leaves upside down and its branches snapping as the storm barreled its way through downtown Mattateque.
Clay stood out in it by the boundary line, letting the rain coarse down his body and soak his clothes. The blacktop of the road steamed so much a fog exploded across town for a good five minutes before being blown away. It was a typical summer thunderstorm. Here for a spell, gone with the hour.
The clouds kept rolling until the sun reappeared, lighting up the giant puddles and the dripping walls. There was probably a rainbow, but he sure as hell couldn’t see it with the office building and the pub rising up on either side blocking his view.
A couple of women passed by the alley a few feet in front of him, one of them glancing at him, but without any recognition. Hours later, Donnie drove past, probably to turn into the back of the pub’s parking lot. Life as usual. Just without that stickiness clinging to the back of his neck.
The next few days the weather hovered around beautiful, the air no longer so thick he thought he was breathing water and the shadows actually bringing relief. Clay would linger for long lengths of time, pacing the alley, half-assing a workout without any weights, letting the thirst and the hunger build until he couldn’t stand it anymore.
Bri visited every day. Usually in the afternoon before she went to hang with her friends. Once in the evening, all dolled up with bright red lips, heels and a purple dress that clung so tight to her ass Clay had to avert his eyes.
She lifted one hand and spun in a slow circle. “He’s picking me up in fifteen.”
“Where are you going?”
“Dinner.”
“If it’s just dinner then you better come back through here with your makeup still on, your hair still done—”
“And my dress not scrunched up,” finished Bri. “Yeah, yeah, I got it, keep yourself together.” She walked past him, kicking up a heel as she gave a giddy chuckle. “He’s gonna swallow his tongue though. Too hot to wear a bra so I’ve got patches on. Stole them from mom.”
“Ah, fuck, Bri, I did not need to know that and he definitely doesn’t need to know that.
